Just a reminder that there will be one more Public Forum regarding the 2011-2012 West Valley School District budget. The Band Rental Night, originally scheduled for Tuesday, September 21, has been rescheduled to WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 22 from 5-8pm in the WVHS Band Room. You may come in anytime during that time to get information and rent an instrument from a local music store. We will also have information on the new Smartmusic system that we will be using throughout the Band program.

We are pleased to present our 2^nd Annual Concert in the Park, which will include performances by the West Valley High School Wind Ensemble, Jazz Band and Percussion Ensemble. Our special guests will be the award-winning West Valley School District Beginning Band. Here goes:

*BARBEQUE: The West Valley Band Boosters will be sponsoring the barbeque and will provide hamburgers, hot dogs and buns. We need you to bring the following:

9^th Grade: Plates, Plastic Silverware, Napkins

10^th Grade: Salad, Veggies, Fruit

11^th Grade: Dessert

12^th Grade: Condiments (Sliced Tomatoes & Onions, Cheese, Lettuce, Catsup, Mustard, etc.)

Also, you will need to bring your own non-alcoholic beverages for your family. Also, bring your own lawn chairs, cameras and video cameras for the barbeque and concert.

It’s a first…

The All-District Beginning Band will be marching in the Junior Lilac Parade on Saturday, May 8. This will be a great time for you to invite your family and friends and cheer on our amazing Beginning Band. They’ll be playing an arrangement of the jazz classic, “Sing, Sing, Sing.” More detailed information will be provided once the parade order is completed.

In the meantime, I need help…

After the parade, we will be going to Millwood Park for a Band celebration, including lunch! I need someone to…

Make arrangements for pizza (40 students + adults)
Order T-shirts and do the follow-through work
Find inexpensive shades for the kids (sunglasses)
Provide punch for the park (I have two large containers)
Provide cookies and desserts for the kids
Organize group activities at the park
Ride the bus and help chaperone during the parade (limited)
Follow the Band during the parade and videotape and take photos
Other???

WV Footballs beats Ellensburg in semi-finals game

West Valley HS Football won the semifinal game against Ellensburg HS, with scores of 24-17. Congratulations WV Football team!

WV Football will play next week Saturday in the Tacoma Dome at 10 am.

A small pep band - 1 bus - will be headed to the championship game.

More information will be sent home with students on Monday - as well as posted here on the web site.

Dear Parents:

With the start of Beginning Band just a few days away, we wanted to pass on some final information that will hopefully answer your questions:

INSTRUMENT PROCUREMENT – The Rental Night on September 15 was a big success. If you missed it, but would still like to order instruments from Ted Brown Music, or if you need help finding an instrument, please Contact Mr. Bosch at Centennial Middle School - 922-5482 (Ext. 2309), or email kyle.bosch@wvsd.com. Information on other local rental stores is also available on request.

BAND METHOD BOOK – We will be using the “Essential Elements 2000” Band Method Book.
Cost is $9.50 (tax included) for all instruments except Percussion which is $16.00 (tax included) – all come with a CD, and a DVD.

BUS TRANSPORTATION TO BAND – You may choose to have your child ride your WVHS neighborhood bus to WVHS in the morning OR you may choose to drop-off your child at WVHS. In either case, be assured that our staff will meet your child each day to make sure they arrive in the Band Room. Students riding the bus or riding in a private vehicle will be dropped-off on Vista and enter the north doors by the new gym. We will also make sure each student gets on the proper bus for the trip to their neighborhood school after Band each morning.

BUS TRANSPORTATION AFTER BAND
After Band is over each day, students simply catch the bus listed below to go to their elementary schools. They arrive before school starts, so they should not miss any class time. Here are the Bus numbers for the return trip to each school each day:

BREAKFAST: Since students will arrive at their elementary schools after breakfast is served, they are allowed to have breakfast at WVHS in the Cafeteria before Band Class. We will arrange supervision in the Cafeteria as needed, and we ask that the students eat quickly so that they will not miss Band time.

BAND WEBSITE: This year, we have a Beginning Band Website that will have just about all the information you will need about schedules, performances, and other activities related to Band. Please visit the site often, as we will be adding content as we get the information. This will be our primary method of giving out information. However, we will also print hard copies of all information for those that are not currently able to access the internet.

Welcome to the new school year! Please check this site often, as this will be the primary method of giving out information on West Valley Beginning Bands. Final details are being worked out for all 5th graders (and City School students from other grades who are interested) to try out instruments. Soon, we will also have information about the rental night, where parents can acquire quality instruments for the children to use in Band.

Mr. Loucks is traveling to the schools this week to give out information about the Beginning Band.

Here is some info about Beginning Band:
When: Each student attends twice a week, depending on which instrument they play. Band class goes from 8:00-8:45am.
Where: West Valley School Band Room
Who: Team taught by Mr. Jim Loucks (WVHS), and Mr. Kyle Bosch (CMS)
How: Students can take buses to WVHS, and then take buses to their regular school after Band. They will not miss any class time!

Invitation to watch the Lilac Festival Parade

The West Valley High School Marching Band would like to invite you to the 2009 Lilac Festival Parade on Saturday, May 16. The parade begins at 7:45 PM and your "Eagles" are the Host Band (Unit #7) - which means the first band in the parade.

So, come early, cheer loudly, and be a part of the award-winning "Eagle" Marching Band.

The Festival of Bands scheduled for May 27 has been canceled, due to a scheduling conflict at WVHS.

Instead, we will have a concert at CMS on Monday, June 1 at 7:00pm in the gym. Performing groups will include:

Combined WVSD Beginning Bands
CMS Combined 6th Grade Advanced & 7/8 Intermediate Bands

WE NEED YOUR HELP!
On Tuesday, February 3, the patrons of the West Valley School District will be asked to renew the following two levies:

Maintenance & Operations (M & O)
Technology

Our great Band Program (Grades 5-12) benefits from both of these levies. So, we need your help!

Here's the Plan:
This Saturday, January 17, we will be canvassing door-to-door in the West Valley School District to inform the public of the upcoming election. We will meet at Millwood Presbyterian Church at 10:00 AM.

Materials, information and street assignments will be passed out.

We will work in groups of two and your son/daughter is invited to work with you.

We need as many people as possible, so please plan on attending this important event. If you can assist us on Saturday, please contact Brian Liberg at brianlib@comcast.net.

SCHOOL CLOSED ON MONDAY, JANUARY 5!!! Spokane County Sheriff Ozzie Knezovich has requested that all schools remain closed on Monday, January 5th citing a number of snow related hazard reasons. West Valley School District will be closed on Monday.
